Essay: Positive Impacts of Globalization

Positive Impacts of Globalization

Ideas, people, and technology have always spread from one place to another, but over the last few hundred years, globalization has accelerated the process. This has had both positive and negative impacts on the world. Many of the positive impacts require a global perspective to appreciate. In fact, without the ability to share knowledge and resources, global challenges like climate change, human rights violations, and the spread of disease would be even more daunting.

Globalization has had a positive impact on people in many ways. The increase of trade has made food more affordable, as agriculture can be done on a larger scale and food can travel longer distances. Increased trade also allows for different cultures to interact with each other, leading to a more open world and more tolerance.

Globalization has many negative connotations, even after it has become the backbone of world trade. Many feel that globalization threatens not only their careers and income opportunities, but also their way of life. The term has become a pejorative in the United States, where many skeptics refuse to see the positive effects of globalization, not only on other countries, but also on our homes and businesses here in the United States.

Perhaps those who oppose globalisation do not really understand all the positive benefits it can and has brought. Maybe we can just put it off to ignorance, and people are still unaware of all the positive effects globalization has had on our country. To address this, we will list four positive effects of globalization. If they learn how beneficial globalization is, perhaps fewer people will oppose it.

What is globalization?

Perhaps those who oppose globalization do so because they don’t know what it is. While it is difficult to define a process as powerful as globalization, the most accurate answer is the process by which governments and businesses around the world interact and integrate. It is focused on the global economy and trade. But globalization is not just another term for the inter connectedness of the international economy. Communication, trade, economics, finance and standard of living are also covered. Technology is a key driver of globalization and has increased economic opportunities for businesses and consumers.

Equality of wealth

Many opponents of globalization claim that it has worsened their living standards. As we in the United States have become accustomed to clean water, food on the table, and a roof over our heads, we have gradually grown accustomed to taking these standards of living for granted. We have forgotten the rest of humanity, who are forced to drink contaminated water, go without food for days on end, and call a bed a home.

Globalisation has provided jobs for countless people in developing countries. It has created the opportunity to invest in emerging markets and tap into previously dormant talent. This way, people in developing countries can work and use this opportunity to start their own business.

Did globalization discourage people from trading in their 2016 car for a new 2017 model? Maybe, but globalization has provided hundreds of thousands if not millions of people around the world with a better standard of living, with clean water and food on the table.

Increased competition

When different companies compete for a consumer’s market, it creates lucrative opportunities for the consumer. This leads not only to price competition between the various competing firms, but also to an increase in the quality of the goods and services offered. So prices go down, quality goes up, what’s the problem?

This became possible when companies started to penetrate international borders and introduce better standards in parts of the world market where consumers used to have limited choice. In the face of this increased competition, manufacturers and suppliers had to constantly look for ways to capture new market share. Therefore: better prices and better products.

Improving market efficiency

One of the benefits that every economy strives for is greater market efficiency. Markets are efficient when buyers are willing to pay for the goods or services that sellers are willing to provide. Outsourcing allows manufacturers and companies to source components and materials that maintain quality but are purchased at lower prices, enabling them to offer their services or products at lower prices and increase demand for their products or services. Even if prices remain unchanged, the firms may, for example, allocate the extra profits to other areas. For example, by increasing investments, expanding production or raising wages.

It may seem far-fetched, but when two countries depend on each other for a stable economy, the likelihood of conflict between them is much lower. Globalisation has helped, perhaps indirectly, to prevent many conflicts at different stages. Of course violence is still widespread in the world and it is unlikely that globalisation or any other measure will end all conflict, but it has helped.

That pejorative word, globalisation, has created opportunities in areas where there was no hope, has helped people achieve a higher standard of living and a better education, has helped countries better understand the cultures of other countries, and has filled gaps in the foreign relations of many nations. The way people can say globalization is bad is similar to the way people said decades ago that rock and roll was the devil’s music. Perhaps as we gain a better understanding of what globalisation can mean for us and for the world, fewer people will oppose it and not be so negative about it because they understand it better.
